Summer Time - when the travelling is easy...
Maybe you've only got a week's holiday...
That's still plenty of time to see some of Europe's twiddlier bits. What about Scandinavia?
Unless you are Father Christmas or a polar bear, Summer's the best time to see all those crinkly bits round the edges, the arctic tundra, the little fishing villages... just think of all that nature waiting for you to go and photograph it.
The best way to see the unfeasibly gorgeous scenery is clearly by train! For starters, you can't drive and gaze at fjords at the same time - it's just not safe. And secondly, the train gets into all those nooks and crannies that other forms of transport can't reach.
The best solution is to grab yourself an InterRail Global 5-day Flexi-Pass. The pass offers you a sort of smorgasbord of rail journeys, entitling you to five days of travel within any 10 day period, and so you can stop off wherever and whenever you like, picking and choosing the juiciest resorts and the most beguiling sights. (View route map.)
| Day 1: Head north, to Newcastle as that's where the ferries go from (specially discounted for InterRail-ers) catch a ferry to Bergen in Norway: it's an overnight crossing, and so get a cabin or couchette and you will arrive all refreshed. | ![]() |
| Day 2: Bergen is the gateway to the fjords, and is an attractive fishing port in itself, and so you may choose to idle there a night... but we'd just hop on the overnight train to Oslo | ![]() |
| Day 3: Explore Oslo to your hearts content, before catching another overnight train across the border to Stockholm in Sweden | ![]() |
| Day 4-5: Spent looking round what they call the Venice of the North, before catching an overnight train to Copenhagen and getting a connection to Hamburg, both fascinating historic ports | ![]() |
| Day 6: If you have a strict 7 day limit, then it's another train from Hamburg to Brussels, where you can catch the Eurostar (from £59.00 per person) back to London | ![]() |
| Day 7+: If you do have an extra day or two with which to play then you could either catch the extremely modern ferry from Stockholm to spend the last two days in Helsinki, or take the epic voyage by train up the coast of Sweden towards the Arctic Circle, and then travel down through Finland (boy, we'd love to do that) | ![]() |
Anyway, there you go: all sorted. Just don't forget to send us a postcard. Book your InterRail Global 5-day Flexi-Pass now!
If you would prefer to spend longer in just an individual country perhaps a One Country InterRail Pass would suit you better?
If Turkey or Scandinavia aren't your thing and you want to go off on your own, then why not look for inspiration in our themed section where we defy you to tell us that there is nothing which appeals to you!
